Many parents ask me: "With AI writing code and generating text, is Computer Science still a good subject for my child to study?"
My answer, after 25 years of teaching computing, is an absolute yes. In fact, it has never been more critical.
AI is not magic. It is built on the foundational pillars of computational thinking: logic, algorithms, data structures, and problem-solving. If a student only knows how to use AI, they are a consumer. If a student knows how AI works, they are a creator.
The Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science (0478) syllabus is perfectly designed for this new era. In Topic 6 (Automated and Emerging Technologies), students don't just read about AI; they study the architecture of Expert Systems (knowledge bases, rule bases, and inference engines) and the principles of Machine Learning. They learn how data is collected, structured, and used to train models.
Furthermore, the rigorous training in Algorithm Design and Programming (Topics 7 & 8) teaches students how to break down complex, real-world problems into logical steps—the exact skill that AI cannot replicate on its own.
The Verdict: AI will automate the mundane, but it will reward the logical, the creative, and the computationally fluent. IGCSE Computer Science does not just prepare students for an exam; it prepares them to be the architects of the future, rather than passengers in it.
